The Things They Carried

Detailed Equipment Allocation Per
18 November 1944 T/O & E 17-27

Listed below, in official Army nomenclature, are all 25,863 of the "official" items that were issued to an independent tank battalion in WWII, from the tanks they fought in, all the way down to the hair clippers and bugles.

The tankers carried all of this, and more. Not listed, of course, are the unauthorized personal items that every man in the 752nd carried. Cameras and diaries, photos of loved ones, photos from the front. Letters from mom and dad, sister and brother. Love letters, Dear John letters. Food from home, food from grateful Italian civilians, food that was "liberated" from farms and villages along the way. Silk stockings from Rome, hand-knit olive drab sweaters sent from home. Cigarettes and Ronson lighters, candy and chewing gum. Battlefield souvenirs and bottles of vino. The personal effects of a fallen buddy, and a solemn promise to get them safely back home. These were the things they carried most carefully.
